HOTSPRING FACTS  | FROZEN WATERFALLS ANYONE?

You won't soon forget your drive up the wild "Fiddle Valley" to the hottest mineral springs in the Rockies. Flowing from the mountain at 54 degrees celsius, the spring water is cooled to a more comfortable temperature of 40C degrees as it enters two pools. Immerse yourself in a hotspring pool and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Consider soaking in the hot therapeutic waters of the hotspring pool and then jumping into the ice-cold pool adjacent to really wake up your senses.

HOTSPRING FACTS

What is a Tufa?
Tufa are found as deposits where hotsprings emerge from the ground. It sits as a soft porous form of limestone.

The Titanic & Mr. Charles Melville Hayes
Charles Melville Hayes was an influential man, president of the Grand Trunk Railway. He planned to build a massive resort, similar to the Banff Springs resort at Miette, near Jasper. The hotsprings would provide hot water and heating for the hotel! Chateau Miette was never started because Charles Melville died on HMS Titanic in 1912!

Pocahontas Coal Mine
For a short but interesting walk (1mile) will find you in the shadow of the Roche Miette Peak.  Here are wonderful views of the Athabasca Valley.  The trail is lined with interpretive signs and artifacts that relate the story of the coal mine that operated in the area in the early 1990's, and the town that grew up around it.  It is quite lovely in the autumn when leaves turn gold and red.  There is a lower loop that is wheelchair accessible.  You start the walk at an eleveation of 3,300 feet and gain a mere 100 meters on the upper loop with a negligible gain on the lower loop.

What affect do Earthquakes in California
have on the Hotsprings of Miette
?
You'll be surprised.

WILDLIFE
-- Careful in the Rockies --
There is dangerous and unpredictable
wildlife like these vicious carnivorous
chipmunks at every turn.

It is fascinating to note the earthquakes that have occurred in very distant parts of North America (California included) may have caused the hot spring waters to temporarily change to dark and musty colors. No one can explain this awesome phenomenon.
