Banff's Hoodoos 3

You can hike from the trail down to the hoodoos so close that you can touch them.  The hill is steep so be sure to have good footware and be in reasonable condition.  Continue down to the river where sandy beaches make good picnic spots and the view of Mount Rundle across from you is belittling.

Off to the right is much smaller Tunnel Mountain which actually has no tunnel through it.  It was planned to build the tunnel for the railway but abandoned when a less costly option was found.

More interesting hikes in the Rocky Mountains.

"Bow Valley Hike"

A TERRIFC HIKE is easily made right from the town of Banff.  Start on Banff Avenue (easy to remember, eh?) traveling south and turn left on Buffalo, which is the last street before the bridge.  Walk up Buffalo for about a mile to the small parking lot at a sharp bend by the roadside. Take the steps down and continue to the Bow River, then follow the river downstream.  Eventually climb a low bluff, stroll through the meadows at Tunnel Mountain where you may see large game and stop for a picnic?

Continue to Tunnel Mountain Road to a lookout on the right and then back into the woods.  Soon thereafter the Hoodoos will display themselves to you.  The hardy can climb the paved trail for stunning views of the Bow Valley and all its scenic glory.
